Gypsies – Gaalu Paare

The “Gypsies”, a legendary musical band in Sri Lanka, recently lost its Lead Singer and frontman Sunil Perera. Piyal Perera, his brother approached Meraki United about creating an animated music video for the Sunil Perera’s last recorded single before his passing, titled “Gaalu Paare” which is a song about the journey from Colombo to Galle along the old Galle Rd. which is a route frequented by many and loved by all.

The band, the singer and the topic of the song were all so colloquial to Sri Lanka and more than anything marked a significant milestone in the illustrious career of the legendary Sunil Perera and his band, Gypsies, who is known for his very Sri Lankan topics and also his entertaining music videos which were even back in the day – ahead of its time. Therefore it was no easy task to essentially create Sunil in animation and produce a music video without him present.

But Piyal (Sunil’s brother) knew that if this track was to be released with an animated video, the video had to be done by Randy…and so it happened.

This Project took 60+ days to complete. The longest it has ever taken for Meraki to produce a music video. And we are VERY proud of the result!

We also produced a teaser video which includes some of Sunil Perera’s iconic speeches. As an advocate for justice and anti-corruption Sunil Perera was never afraid to speak out. He was known for his sincerity, honesty and his bold and fearless personality. He was a true icon, and he will be missed.
